Rates are typical starting points — check your seed bag, as varieties differ. Don't over-apply: seedlings that crowd each other thin out. Even watering matters more than extra seed.

How the grass seed calculator works

Pounds of seed = (lawn square feet ÷ 1,000) × seeding rate. Each grass has its own rate — Bahia ~8 lbs, Bermuda ~2, Centipede ~0.5 per 1,000 sq ft for a new lawn. Overseeding thin spots uses about half that.

A Florida note

Bahia is the main warm-season grass grown from seed here. St. Augustine and most Zoysia can't be seeded — they're established from sod, which is why most Southwest Florida lawns are sodded. If that's you, our sod calculator figures pallets instead.

Want a lawn that fills in fast?

In Florida, sod beats seed for most yards — instant, even, and far fewer washouts. We supply and install sod across North Port, Venice, Port Charlotte & Englewood.
