Tree Trimming & Removal in Southwest Florida

Trees improperly trimmed before hurricane season — whether over-pruned, lion-tailed, or left with crossing dead branches — fail in high winds. The method and timing of trimming determine whether your trees shed wind or catch it.

Dennis P.

I've been doing this service in Southwest Florida long enough to know exactly where generic crews cut corners — and exactly what it costs homeowners six months later. Every job I take, I'm the one accountable if something's off.

The Basics

What Tree Work Involves in Southwest Florida

Tree work covers trimming, pruning, shaping, and removal — keeping trees healthy and structurally sound, clearing hazards, and hauling out the debris when the job's done. The right cuts at the right time protect the tree; the wrong ones invite decay or storm failure.

Hurricane wind load is the defining concern here: proper trimming reduces the sail effect that topples trees in a storm, while over-trimming palms (“hurricane cuts”) actually weakens them. Many trees also fall under HOA canopy rules or county permits. We trim for storm resilience and tree health, and flag anything that needs a permit before we cut.

Three SW Florida Tree Realities That Most Crews Don't Address

Tree care in SW Florida is different from anywhere else in the country — hurricane season, palm-specific species, and HOA canopy rules all factor in.

🌀

FL Root System Risk

Hurricane Wind Load

Tap to see what this means ↓

Mistake: Lion-tailing trees (removing interior branching while leaving a tuft at the top) before hurricane season

Lion-tailing is one of the most common improper pruning practices in SW Florida, and it's the worst thing you can do before hurricane season. The top-heavy canopy acts like a sail in high winds, dramatically increasing the likelihood of failure.

We trim for structural integrity and wind resistance — not just aesthetics. That means elevating the canopy from the bottom, reducing end weight on long limbs, and removing crossing branches — not stripping the interior and leaving a ball of foliage on top.

Hurricane Prep Factor

Palm Trimming Over-Zealousness

Tap to see what this means ↓

Mistake: Removing green fronds from palms in SW Florida to achieve the 'hurricane cut' look

The 'hurricane cut' — trimming palms to just a few fronds — is widely promoted in SW Florida as storm prep, but it's actually harmful and based on a myth. Green fronds provide structural support for the crown shaft. Over-trimmed palms are weaker, not stronger, and can lose their crown entirely in a storm.

We remove only brown, dead fronds and seed pods — and we never cut above the 9-and-3 o'clock line. Palms trimmed this way retain structural integrity and shed wind correctly. They also look better long-term.

HOA Tree Rules

Mistake: Removing trees in SW Florida without checking county permit requirements

Charlotte and Sarasota Counties have tree protection ordinances that require permits for removal of trees over certain caliper or for species listed as protected. Removing a protected tree without a permit results in significant fines and mandatory replacement requirements.

We research permit requirements for every removal project before touching a saw. We identify protected species, advise on alternatives to removal when possible, and pull required permits before any tree comes down.

The Result

The tree is gone, the property is safe, and the lawn is clean. No damage to the home, no debris left behind.

This is what the finished job looks like. No surprises, no shortcuts — just the work.

Transparent Pricing

What Determines the Cost of Tree Work in SW Florida

Tree work pricing varies significantly based on species, size, location, and scope — here's what drives the number.

🌳

Factor 1

Tree Size & Species

A 20-foot queen palm frond trim costs very differently from removing a 50-foot oak or a multi-trunk ficus. Species affects difficulty, required equipment, and debris volume.

📍

Factor 2

Location & Access

A tree over a house, pool cage, or power line requires significantly more care in sectional removal than one in an open yard. Tight access that prevents truck or chipper access adds hand-carry labor time.

📋

Factor 3

Permit Requirements

Permitted removals in Charlotte and Sarasota County add lead time and permit fee cost. We research this upfront and include it in the scope — no surprises after we've looked at the tree.

🚛

Factor 4

Debris Volume & Haul

Large trees generate significant debris. Chipping and haul-out is included in every scope — we don't leave anything behind. The volume of material directly affects how long the project takes.

Tree work cost depends on the tree's size and species, its location and access, permit requirements, and the volume of debris to chip and haul. Every tree work job is quoted individually — there's no flat rate, because no two SW Florida yards are the same. Palm Removal + Stump Grind — Pre-Landscaping Clearance

A North Port homeowner needed a palm removed and the stump ground before a new landscaping bed could be installed in that zone. We cut it down, hauled the palm away, and ground the stump to below grade. Total: $385. Crew was done in the morning and the landscape crew started the same afternoon.

Result: Palm removed and stump ground before noon — landscape installation started same day on schedule.

Result: Both palms removed and stumps cleared before paver install began — zero scheduling delays.

What Separates Tree Work Done Right From Work That Makes Your Trees Worse

Bad tree trimming in SW Florida doesn't just look wrong — it creates structural failure risk before hurricane season.

The cheaper quote Epic Horizons
Lion-tailing — stripping interior branches and leaving a top-heavy ball of foliage that fails in wind
Structural canopy reduction that reduces end weight and allows wind to pass through the canopy
'Hurricane cut' on palms — removing green fronds that provide crown shaft structural support
Only dead and brown fronds removed — never above the 9-and-3 line, never compromising structural integrity
Tree removal without checking permit requirements — county fines and mandatory replacement orders
Permit requirements researched for every removal before a saw is started
Debris left at curb or in yard — homeowner responsible for disposal
All debris chipped and hauled same day — complete cleanup standard on every project
No assessment — crew trims by appearance without evaluating structural condition
Every project starts with a structural assessment — condition and risk evaluated before work begins
I've seen trees that were trimmed three months before a hurricane that failed badly — because they were lion-tailed and the canopy caught the wind like a kite. The method matters as much as the timing. Dennis, Owner — Epic Horizons Landscaping

Common Questions

Still Have Questions?

June 1 is the official start of hurricane season. Ideally, structural trimming should be done in April or May — before the season starts, but after the dry-season growth push. Trimming too late (July or August) leaves fresh cuts exposed to storm conditions.
Charlotte and Sarasota Counties have tree protection ordinances. Protected species and trees over certain trunk diameter require permits for removal. We research permit requirements for every project and handle the application. Never assume — the fines are significant.
The hurricane cut removes green fronds that provide structural support to the crown shaft. Research by the University of Florida has shown that severely over-trimmed palms are actually more prone to crown shaft loss in storms, not less. We remove only dead and brown fronds — that's the correct standard.
Yes — this is one of our most common removal scenarios. Tight removals near structures require sectional takedowns with controlled drop zones. We assess the site and plan the removal sequence to protect adjacent structures throughout.
Standard removal cuts the stump to grade — flush with or just below the soil surface. Full stump grinding is a separate service that removes the root mass and allows the area to be replanted or sodded. We offer both and will advise based on your plans for the area.
In most Florida jurisdictions, you have the right to trim branches that cross your property line, at your expense. We can trim to the property line and give you a clean boundary. For trees that pose an active hazard, we can document the situation and advise on how to approach your neighbor about it.
Tree work is priced per job because it depends on the tree size and species, location and access, permits, and the volume of debris to chip and haul. Our project gallery and reviews show the kind of work we do, and we will give you a free written quote after assessing the tree.
The best window is before hurricane season, so trees are wind-resilient when storms arrive; palms should be trimmed lightly and never hurricane-cut. Some trees fall under HOA canopy rules or county permits. We trim for storm resilience and flag anything that needs a permit before we cut.
