How the sod calculator works
Pallets = (square feet + waste) ÷ pallet coverage. The coverage depends on what you're buying:
Florida (warm-season) — pallets & pieces
St. Augustine and Zoysia pallets cover about 400 sq ft; Bahia, a lower-cost grass, comes a little shorter at around 375 sq ft per pallet. Both are cut into slabs of roughly 2 sq ft each, so a pallet holds about 200 pieces.
Northern US (cool-season) — rolls
Cool-season grasses are sold in rolls of about 10 sq ft (typically 2′×5′), palletized at 500–600 sq ft. Switch the grass type above to "Cool-season rolls" and the calculator counts rolls instead of pieces.
Always order a little extra
Add 5–10% for cuts around curves, beds, and walkways. A few leftover pieces also patch any gaps that open up while the sod establishes.

How much does a pallet of sod cover
A pallet of sod in Florida usually covers about 400 to 500 square feet, depending on the grower and the grass type. St. Augustine pallets are commonly in that range. Always ask your supplier for the exact square footage per pallet before you order, because it is the number your whole estimate depends on.
Growers cut slab sizes differently and stack different counts per pallet, so two suppliers selling the same grass can give you different coverage. Get the square footage on the quote, not from memory, and base your order on that figure.
Pallet of sod
A pallet of sod is a stack of cut grass slabs, delivered on a wooden pallet, that covers roughly 400 to 500 square feet of lawn. It is how Florida growers and suppliers sell sod in bulk. Whole-lawn jobs are ordered by the pallet, and the supplier delivers it to the driveway.
Plan where the pallet will sit before it arrives. It is heavy, it should not be dragged across a finished lawn, and in Florida heat the sod needs to go down quickly. Have the area graded, the irrigation checked and your tools ready the day it lands.

To calculate St. Augustine sod, multiply the lawn's length by its width in feet to get square footage, subtract any beds and hardscape, add 5 to 10 percent for cuts and waste, then divide by the square feet per pallet. Use the calculator on this page to do it automatically.
Curved beds, pool decks and angled property lines create more cut waste, so use the higher 10 percent allowance on those lots. The table below uses 10 percent waste and rounds up to whole pallets.

One pallet of sod covers about 400 to 500 square feet, which is roughly a 20-by-20-foot to 20-by-25-foot area. Confirm the exact coverage with your supplier before ordering, and round up if your measured area plus waste is even slightly over.
Running a few square feet short is the usual mistake. A bare strip along a driveway or fence line in Florida's summer sun fills with weeds fast, and a late partial delivery means the first pallet sits and dries out while you wait.

On a large order the gap between 400 and 500 square feet per pallet adds up to several pallets, so check this number first.

A pallet of sod covers about 400 to 500 square feet of lawn, which is roughly the size of a 20 by 20 to 20 by 25 foot patch. Your supplier's listed square footage per pallet is the number to use, since coverage differs between growers and grass types.
Measure the real area, not the lot. Houses, driveways, lanais, pool cages and planting beds all come out of the total. On sandy Southwest Florida lots the lawn is often smaller than owners expect once those are subtracted.

How much is one pallet of sod
The price of one pallet of sod depends on the grass variety, the grower, delivery distance, and the time of year, so there is no single number. Get a written quote that lists the price per pallet, the square feet per pallet, and the delivery fee.
Divide the price by the square feet on the pallet to get a cost per square foot, and compare quotes that way. Ask whether the pallet is a deposit item and whether delivery is charged per trip. How much sod do i need
Measure the lawn's length and width in feet, multiply for square footage, subtract beds and hardscape, then add 5 to 10 percent for waste. Divide by the square feet per pallet and round up. A 2,000 square foot lawn needs about 2,200 square feet of sod, or 5 to 6 pallets.
For odd shapes, break the lawn into rectangles and triangles, measure each, and add them up. A triangle is half the base times the height. Sandy Florida soil should be graded and smooth before sod goes down, since low spots hold water in summer rain and high spots dry out first.
How long can sod be left on pallet
Lay sod within 24 hours of delivery, and in Florida summer heat, the same day. Stacked sod heats up and starts to yellow and break down quickly, and the middle of the pallet cooks first. If it must wait, keep it shaded and moist, and expect more loss the longer it sits.
Do not leave a pallet in full sun on a driveway. Pavement adds heat, and a wet pallet in a rainy stretch can also rot from the inside. Start laying from the outside of the pallet and work in, and water the new sod soon after it is down, because sandy soil drains fast and the roots have nothing to draw from yet.
