Bale coverage varies with how thick you spread it. Order a bale or two extra for edges and a fuller look. Pine straw breaks down faster than wood mulch — plan to refresh 1–2× a year in Florida.

How the pine straw calculator works

Bales = bed square feet ÷ coverage per bale. A fresh 3-inch install runs about 30 sq ft per bale; a seasonal top-dress over existing straw stretches to about 50 sq ft per bale.

Pine straw in Southwest Florida

It's light, easy to spread, and stays put on slopes better than wood mulch — but it decomposes faster in our heat and rain, so beds need a refresh once or twice a year. A thin top-dress keeps them looking full without burying the crowns of your plants.
