How the mulch calculator works

Cubic yards = (square feet × depth in inches) ÷ 324. One cubic yard covers about 162 sq ft at 2″ or 108 sq ft at 3″. A standard 2-cu-ft bag covers roughly 12 sq ft at 2″, and there are about 13.5 of those bags in a cubic yard.

How deep should mulch be?

In Southwest Florida, 2–3 inches is the sweet spot. Thinner than 2″ won't hold back weeds; thicker than 3–4″ traps too much moisture against stems in our humidity and invites rot. Always pull mulch a few inches back from trunks.

Bags or bulk?

Bags are convenient for one or two beds. Once you're past ~2 cubic yards, bulk delivery is cheaper and faster — and you're not hauling 27 bags.
