How the topsoil calculator works
Cubic yards = (square feet × depth in inches) ÷ 324. Topsoil weighs about 1.1–1.3 tons per cubic yard, so the calculator also gives tons (handy when a supplier sells by weight) and bag counts for small jobs.
How deep?
3–4 inches to start a new lawn, deeper to level low spots or build raised beds. In Port Charlotte and other older fill-dirt neighborhoods, a topsoil cap over poor fill is often what gets grass to actually grow.
