Retaining Walls in Nokomis, FL

Nokomis's coastal sandy soil drains fast — but near Dona Bay and Lyons Bay, the water table is high enough that it saturates from below. A retaining wall without drainage behind it becomes a dam against hydrostatic pressure that builds from both directions.

"Epic built a retaining wall for us as well as some sodding of spots in our yard. The wall came out great. We're very happy with it. It should solve our erosion problem and save our fence. They delivered, as promised, and at a decent price. The project took 8 days start to finish with only a couple small delays that were well communicated. Dennis and his crew worked very hard, and did a high quality job. Epic was very easy to work with and delivered what they promised. We couldn't be more pleased."

Local Expertise

A Nokomis retaining wall without drainage behind it will fail — and near Dona Bay, the water comes from below as much as from behind.

Most retaining wall failures in Nokomis happen because of hydrostatic pressure — water building up in the soil mass behind the wall until the force overcomes the structure. In Nokomis, this pressure is compounded near Dona Bay and Lyons Bay by a high water table that saturates the soil from below during wet season. Standard gravel backer and weep holes are still required — but walls near tidal influence also need the footing designed to account for saturated base conditions. We build every retaining wall here with a minimum 12-inch gravel backer, proper weep drainage, and footings appropriate to the site's proximity to the bay.

Retaining Walls work in Nokomis

Nokomis, FL

Stone retaining wall with podocarpus and pygmy date palm planting

Location

Nokomis, FL

Material / Scope

66 retaining wall blocks, 4.5 cu yd topsoil, pygmy date palm, podocarpus

Total Area

33-ft stone retaining wall (66 blocks) + 4.5 cu yd topsoil + pygmy date palm + podocarpus

Timeline

2 days

Grade change in the backyard had been causing runoff to pool at the fence line and erode the soil. The coastal sandy soil was loosening and shifting at the base of the grade change. We built a 33-ft stone retaining wall using 66 blocks to hold the grade, backfilled with 4.5 cu yd of topsoil behind the wall, and planted a pygmy date palm and podocarpus to anchor the bed and stabilize the retained area over time.

Result: Grade holding cleanly through rainy season; plants establishing above the wall; no further pooling at fence line.
Lanai beds with concrete curbing, rock, and tropical plants

Location

Nokomis, FL

Material / Scope

664 sq ft weed barrier, 6 cu yd decorative rock, 50 ft concrete curbing, tropical plants, irrigation reroute

Total Area

664 sq ft weed mat, 6 cu yd rock, 50 ft curbing, plants, irrigation reroute

Timeline

2 days

Lanai rock bed build where 50 ft of concrete curbing acts as the grade containment element — holding rock and bed material at the correct elevation along the lanai perimeter. Getting the curbing set first defines the bed boundaries and prevents rock from spreading into the lawn under Nokomis's summer rain. Weed mat, 6 cu yd of decorative rock, and plant install through fabric cuts completed the build.

Result: Lanai beds contained and clean; no rock migration at lawn interface at 3-month follow-up.
Completed landscape with rock beds, palms, curbing, and drainage

Location

Nokomis, FL

Material / Scope

4 pallets sod, 742 sq ft weed mat, 7 cu yd black slate, 90 ft concrete curbing, Christmas palms, agave, downspout drain system

Total Area

4 pallets sod, 90 ft curbing, 742 sq ft weed mat, 7 cu yd black slate, Christmas palms, agave, downspout drain

Timeline

3 days

Full property build in Nokomis where drainage had to be resolved first. Downspouts were discharging at the foundation and grade along the house needed correction. We ran downspout lines underground, corrected grade, installed 90 ft of concrete curbing to define all bed edges, then completed the landscape build: 4 pallets sod, 742 sq ft weed mat, 7 cu yd black slate, Christmas palms, and agave.

Result: Drainage resolved; full landscape build complete in 3 days; all plant material established.
Retaining wall trench with gravel backer near coastal property

Location

Nokomis, FL

Material / Scope

Segmental block, gravel drainage backer, filter fabric, grade fill

Total Area

Retaining wall at eroding grade change + gravel backer + grade correction

Timeline

2 days

A Nokomis property near the bay had a grade change that was actively eroding — the coastal sandy soil was washing down the slope with every heavy rain event. We built a retaining wall at the break in grade to hold the slope, installed a gravel drainage backer to handle the water that accumulated against it from the high water table, and regraded the area above the wall to direct surface water away from the structure.

Result: Erosion stopped; wall holding cleanly after first rainy season; no sediment loss reported.

How We Work

Retaining Walls in Nokomis: What Actually Happens

I've done this job in Nokomis enough times to know what catches people off guard. Here's what actually matters — and what's specific to this area.

Step 01

Engineering Assessment + Permit Check

Dennis assesses the site — slope, soil type, surcharge loads, and drainage direction. Walls over 30 inches typically require an engineer stamp and permit. We confirm requirements with the local authority before any design is finalized.

⏱ Before work begins

Nokomis: In Nokomis, proximity to Dona Bay and Lyons Bay is a primary assessment factor — walls within the tidal influence zone need footing design that accounts for saturated base conditions and the risk of lateral water movement through the sandy soil.

Step 02

Base Excavation + Foundation Course

The trench is excavated to the correct footing depth — at minimum, one course buried below grade plus a gravel footing bed. The base course of block is set and leveled precisely. Level and batter are confirmed before the second course is set.

⏱ Day 1

Nokomis: Nokomis's coastal sandy soil is loose and can shift during excavation — we set the base course on a compacted gravel pad rather than directly on sand, which gives the wall a stable footing that won't settle unevenly over time.

Step 03

Wall Build + Block-by-Block Level Check

Courses are stacked with the correct batter — each course set back slightly toward the slope. Every third course is leveled across the full wall length. Geogrid is installed at specified intervals for walls over 3 feet. Drainage aggregate is packed behind the wall as courses rise.

⏱ Day 1–3

Nokomis: Drainage aggregate behind the wall is non-negotiable in Nokomis — especially near Dona Bay where the high water table saturates the soil mass behind the wall from below. Without the drainage backer, hydrostatic pressure builds from both rainfall and tidal influence.

Step 04

Backfill + Cap Course + Final Grading

Clean fill is backfilled behind the wall in compacted lifts — no large rocks or construction debris. Cap course is set with adhesive and checked for level and overhang. The retained area is graded to drain away from the back of the wall. Disturbed sod or plantings are restored.

⏱ Final day

Nokomis: Backfill in Nokomis must be clean, well-draining material — not the native coastal sand scraped from the site, which shifts and settles too readily to provide stable structural backfill behind the wall.

From Dennis P. — Owner, Epic Horizons

"I've done this job in Nokomis enough times to know exactly what makes it different here — and what goes wrong when someone skips the steps that matter."

Nokomis has specific site conditions that change how Retaining Walls is done. The coastal sandy soil, the high water table near Dona Bay and Lyons Bay, the tidal bank erosion — these aren't generic considerations. They're the actual job. Every estimate I give factors these in from the start.

What Affects the Price in Nokomis

Nokomis has specific conditions that change what a Retaining Walls project costs here. Here's what goes into your number.

📐

Wall length and height

Square face footage determines block quantity

Wall cost is driven by length times height (face square footage). A 40-foot wall at 3 feet high uses twice the block of the same wall at 18 inches. Engineering requirements also increase with height.

🧱

Block material

Concrete block, natural stone, and timber are all options

Concrete segmental block is the most common — durable, moisture-resistant, and appropriate for Nokomis's coastal conditions. Natural stone walls cost more but have a different aesthetic. Timber is avoided near the bay due to moisture, tidal exposure, and accelerated pest activity in Nokomis's humid coastal environment.

💧

Drainage system

Gravel backer and pipe add to cost but are non-negotiable

Skipping the drainage backer saves money for maybe 3 years, then you're rebuilding the wall. In Nokomis — especially near Dona Bay — proper drainage behind the wall is not optional and is included in every project we bid.

🚜

Site access

Tight backyard access adds mobilization cost

Walls in backyards with limited equipment access require hand-setting more material. If the site can't get a mini-excavator or skid steer in, labor time increases accordingly.

Built to hold — not just look good on install day.

Every wall we build in Nokomis includes proper drainage engineering. We give you a written scope before we start.

Questions & Answers

Retaining Walls in Nokomis — Common Questions

Answer The high water table near the bay means the soil behind a retaining wall is already saturated during wet season — water is coming up from below, not just running down from above. Without a gravel drainage backer and proper weep holes, the hydrostatic pressure has nowhere to go and the wall fails from within. Every wall we build near the bay includes drainage designed for this condition.
Answer Most of Nokomis is unincorporated Sarasota County. Walls under 4 feet typically don't require a county permit. Most Nokomis neighborhoods have no HOA, so HOA approval is usually not required — confirm if you're in Calusa Lakes. For walls over 4 feet, Sarasota County may require a permit and engineering specifications — we identify this at the estimate stage.
Answer Concrete segmental block is the standard for Nokomis — it handles the moisture exposure well, including the high-humidity coastal environment near Dona Bay. Timber is not recommended here because the combination of moisture, heat, and salt air significantly shortens its lifespan. Natural stone is an option for aesthetics at a higher cost.
Answer In unincorporated Sarasota County, walls up to 4 feet can typically be built without a licensed engineer's stamp using standard segmental block per manufacturer specs. Above 4 feet, engineered drawings are usually required. We'll tell you at the estimate stage if your project crosses that line.
Answer A well-placed retaining wall can stop active soil loss at a grade change or slope. For properties experiencing tidal bank erosion near Dona Bay, the wall design needs to account for periodic submersion and hydrostatic pressure from the tidal cycle — standard residential retaining wall specs are not always sufficient. Dennis assesses the specific erosion mechanism before recommending a solution.
